IDENTITY THEFT & YOUR ACCOUNT
Phishing and Pharming
Not Fishing and Farming (which is fun)
Phishing is a type of fraud where thieves "fish" for your personal
financial information via the Internet and your e-mail.
By sending e-mails that may look like they are from a legitimate
source, fraudsters attempt to gain your trust, or take advantage of
the fact that you may be in a hurry. The "links" in these e-mails do
not go to a legitimate web site, but to a fraudster's web page.
TIP: You can see
where a link is going by rolling over it and watching the info bar
at the bottom of your browser window.
The fraudster's page may attempt to trick you into disclosing your
account numbers, passwords, Social Security number, or other
personal identifying information -- do not disclose this
information! This is the first step in becoming an identity theft
victim!
In the past, Phishing fraudsters have targeted larger, national bank
customers, but community banks may be targeted due to our more
"personable" and "hands on" approach to banking. Since we have such
strong relationships with our customers, you may let your guard
down. To that end, here are a few reminders:
The Friendship State
Bank will never call you
on the telephone to request confidential account information.
Quite simply, we
already have your information securely and safely managed. In some
instances, such as during the loan application process, we may need
to verify information, but in that case, you will know who you are
talking to, and if you are suspicious, you can always call us at
877-667-5101 and you will know you are talking to someone at The
Friendship State Bank.
Banks will never ask
for confidential information through e-mail.
We discourage using
e-mail to convey any personal financial information. You may send a
secure message through our Internet Banking portal, but never send
personal information in a normal message.
Monitor your account
information carefully and if you think your information has been
compromised, notify us immediately.
We're here to help. Internet Banking is
a terrific way to stay on top of your account, since you can access
it at any time and from any computer.
E-statements, which are free
with our free Internet Banking, are another way to
decrease your risk, as the statement is no longer sent through the
mail (which may be intercepted). You
can always call us at 877-667-5101 and you will know you are talking
to someone at The Friendship State Bank.
