Riley Boone: 2017 Wilke S and James W Lemon Recipient

Riley Boone PortraitMy name is Riley Boone and I was the recipient of the 2017 Wilke S and James W Lemon Scholarship. I'm currently in the BS/MS program at IUPUI (Indianapolis) in the Purdue School of Engineering and Technology. I am studying Organizational Leadership, with a minor in Health Systems Administration.

I started taking my master’s classes this January along with finishing my undergraduate courses. I'm excited to get started with my future and career. I will be graduating this May (2020) with my Bachelor’s Degree and finishing my Master's in 2021. I have had the opportunity of taking summer classes and internships that have given me personal experience and allowed me to get my foot in the door while testing my own skills.

I am very appreciative for the scholarship I received to help me pursue this education. I am especially proud of getting to be a part of the Child Advocacy Center which I wrote my scholarship essay.

The connections that we form with people teach us lifelong lessons and have better prepared me for the life skills that I continue to develop every day. This has given me the drive to succeed.

Children are very important, especially those who need an extra shoulder to lean on. I saw that first hand helping my mom with the Child Advocacy Center fundraiser that helped promote growth in Jefferson County. It also enriched my own life. It teaches us to give back and philanthropy is a gift like no other. It showed me where I was and how I could fulfill my purpose even after I went to college.

There are so many worthwhile things you can do with careers and education. I feel my life has taken the right direction. I want to thank everyone who has allowed me to have such a solid beginning.

I think what this scholarship did was put me on the fast track for a career that I know I can succeed in and grow in. I am forever grateful for this scholarship I was given and for the opportunities that continue to cross my path.

I'd encourage graduating seniors and those completing this year's scholarship application to:
  • trust yourself
  • get involved
  • start early
  • be proud of your accomplishments
  • have a positive attitude
